For many years, drivers have been dreaming of a self-driving car that allows its owner to simply sit back and relax. While this may seem like a sci-fi fantasy, Audi has recently made large strides in the automated car world with the new A7 concept car. With multiple fully automated test drives in both New York and Germany, this seemingly far-fetched dream may be even closer than ever.
On June 13th, Audi introduced the automated A7 concept vehicle to the streets of Albany, New York. This special technology presentation marked not only the first automated vehicle to be driven in New York, but also the first time that any automaker was able to perform automated testing in the entire state. Audi technicians offered legislators, members of the media, and Audi shareholders the chance to witness how this unique A7 drives itself on real world roads. While two Audi engineers were present in the vehicle to monitor the tests, the car could maneuver through a closed section of the city while successfully passing through traffic lights, signs, and other everyday driving experiences.
However, New Yorkers aren’t the only drivers able to see the self-driving A7 in action. From July 20th throughout the month of August, Audi customers near Munich, Germany can view this model in action on the world-famous autobahn. With this unique experience, clients are taken on a 60-minute drive north of Munich on the A9 autobahn. An Audi expert is once again on board, but only to monitor the drive and to make sure the passenger is as comfortable as possible. Throughout the drive, the A7 uses a series of advanced sensors and cameras to monitor the road and create a detailed image of the surroundings. This allows the vehicle to drive safely and smoothly up to 80 mph, even while other drivers are also on the road.
Audi is well-known for constantly innovating and improving modern technology, so it is no surprise that they are also the leaders in developing a self-driving vehicle. With the new A7 concept vehicle, Audi is quickly bringing the fantasy of the automated car to life.
